Degree or skills — what really matters in content writing?
If a brand is hiring a content writer, do they check your degree first… or do they check your portfolio?
In my experience, it’s the latter. A degree may give you credibility, but in
content writing, your words are your true qualification.
Here’s what really matters:
· Can you craft a blog that ranks?
· Can you write copy that converts?
· Can you adapt your tone to match a brand’s voice?
These skills get you hired — not just the certificate hanging on your wall.
I’ve seen:
· Writers with no formal degree create content that drives traffic, builds communities, and influences buying decisions.
· Degree-holders sometimes struggle to connect with audiences because writing is less about theory and more about practice.
In this field, your portfolio is your degree. Every published piece is proof of
what you can do.
Skills open doors. Results keep them open.
What’s your take — does a degree still hold weight, or do skills speak louder?

You have to be skilled, if not no one will work with you.
